Cook, James
Typical of mid and late 20th century art, the works of James Cook represent his interest in the materiality of the paint.  His rich colors and luscious surfaces make his figurative paintings completely comprehensible and, at the same time, contain tiny islands of sumptuous abstract passages that are almost musical in their rhythm.  Cook is an artist in full stride – capable of rendering the western forests and streams, industrial sites, nighttime views of downtown office and residential towers with the same degree of virtuosity and emotional intensity.

James Cook earned his BA from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, in 1970 and his MFA from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, in 1972.  He has had some 40 solo exhibitions, and since 1980, has exhibited in over 100 group exhibitions.   His paintings can be found in many public and private collections including the Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona; Indiana University Art Museum, Bloomington, Indiana; Museum of Contemporary Art, Osaka, Japan; State University of New York, Albany, NY; Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin; Princeton University Collection, New Jersey.
