Whitenight, Joanie
Joanie Whitenight is a Lawrence, Kan., native who, after graduating from KU, traveled throughout Europe to study the work of the great masters. She also studied for several years with Robert Sudlow, one of the state’s most esteemed artists. Joanie’s impressionistic style and color palette is sometimes compared to that of Sudlow, but her style and sophisticated color language are all her own. She uses color in a way that is both of the natural world and of some other, imagined world. Her ordinary subject matter—the Kansas landscape—becomes suddenly extraordinary, complex and surprising.
